Tuesday 15 October – 31st meeting 2013
Originally we had planned to go to the Cinema Museum at Elephant and Castle but as we are still not a full group and hadn’t made a booking we changed our plans! Not the first time we have done this!
We met up at Charing Cross and had coffee in The Crypt. We then made our way to Tottenham Court Road on the tube and walked to Little Russell Street to the Cartoon Museum.
The building was very decorative and appeared to be an old dairy. The museum itself is quite small and over two floors but was packed with over 200 exhibits of original cartoons and caricatures. We first went round ‘The Age of Glamour’ exhibition which had a display caricatures of stars of the golden age of Hollywood including, Garbo, Chaplin, Bette Davis, Buster Keaton, Ralph Richardson to mention a few. After spending some time here we then went into the children’s gallery featuring Peppa Pig among others and then upstairs to a large area of workshop and exhibits of political cartons etc.
We spoke to a volunteer helper who enthused about his job there and was enjoying the huge pile of comics left for visitors to enjoy whilst sitting down. There was also a small shop selling books, cards and quirky comical gifts.
It was a very enjoyable and although the building was small it certainly had a lot of content packed into it. The building on the outside and a few of the surrounding buildings were also pleasing to the eye and interesting. All in all a very good day.
