Tuesday October 29th – 33 meeting of 2013
We met today at London Bridge then Northern Line to Angel as we were doing a walk in Islington from the London Walking Book. It was a nice bright day which was good after the storm wind and rains of the last few days.
At Angel the walk took us to the oldest coach house which was now a Wetherspoons Pub so we went in for tea and toast to set us up for the 3 mile walk ahead.
The walk then went along Islington High Street. This is a lovely High Street with many of the old Edwardian, Victorian houses still surviving and in use! In Edwardian times this area became the play fun area where the wealthy people living in central London would come to enjoy themselves!
Many interesting quirky, craft shops and also lots of antique shops in the area. We had a bit of celeb spotting by seeing Jake Wood alias Max Branning of Eastenders fame, with his wife and son going into one of the clothes shops! Another name to add to our list! The walk took us in some beautiful small streets off of the High Street with well-preserved houses from 1750 and 1880. There were also lots of green open spaces and parks and a New River with footpath beside it.
It was very noticeable that the area had been affected by the recent storm. Many trees blown down, one looking as if it hit a car and leaves and debris everywhere.
When we got to Islington and Highbury underground it started to rain so we decided to leave the walk there having completed two-thirds of it, 2 miles. We hope to return at a later point and carry on and finish the complete walk.
We got our trains home and had all enjoyed the walk very much in a really beautiful part of London Town.
