Tuesday 3rd February – 4th meeting of 2015
Today we woke up to the white stuff – yes a lovely covering of snow and it was a very heavy snow shower. After a few phone calls we decided to carry on with our meeting as the weather men said it wouldn’t last long and it would soon warm up and sun would be shining by mid morning.
We planned to visit the exhibition ‘Elvis at The 02’ and six of us met inside the 02. The weather had caused a problem for some of our ladies. Inside The 02 we walked around to the exhibition area and were told we couldn’t purchase our tickets there but only at the ticket office at the entrance. This meant a walk back to where we had met and although under cover inside the 02 is quite cold! We got our tickets £14.50, concessions included a booking fee and although a timed ticket we were told we could go in at any time! By now we definitely needed a coffee so went outside to a lovely restaurant and sat, chatted and warmed up with a hot drink! Once refreshed we went back into the 02 and walked to the exhibition.
This exhibition is direct from Graceland and claims to be ‘the largest Elvis exhibition ever in Europe’. As we entered we had Elvis singing out which was a good start! The exhibition was well laid out. Starting with his early days, his army days, Hollywood years and Graceland. There were lots of photos, birth certificate, Gold Discs, army memorabilia and many exhibits from Graceland including jewellery, ornaments, golf buggies, records and of course guitars. There were earphones that you could listen to Elvis first recording. Quite scratchy but good to listen to.
In the main area there were five or six of his jump suits including the famous white highly decorated Eagle one. There was a Cadillac, Harley Davidson bike, pool table used by Elvis and The Beatles and clothes, shoes, hats and boots from his wardrobe. Throughout the exhibition there was Elvis singing appropriate songs.
At the end of exhibit were was a very good film show of 25 minutes. The area was laid out like a concert hall and it showed clips from Elvis concerts starting with his first television appearance through his Vegas days and his comeback concerts.
We all really enjoyed this exhibition and I thought it was really well laid out and with so many exhibits and items to look out it gave a good insight into ‘The King’. I for one like Elvis music and thoroughly enjoyed my morning.
We made our way home and found all snow had gone and sun and blue sky had appeared!
