Tuesday 29th November – 43rd meeting of 2016
Today we meet at Charing Cross then took the District Line to South Kensington to visit Victoria and Albert museum and view the collection of fashion.
Once there we went to the William Morris tea rooms for a coffee. It was very busy but we managed to get a table for eight to sit comfortably. This is one of my favourite tea rooms!
After this we made our way to view the collection of fashion. Set out in many display cabinets the exhibits were shown in chronological order. We were interested and amused at the older clothing especially the crinoline dresses and all the paraphernalia that went with wearing them. How ladies managed to wear all this fashion and keep smiling is amazing! The gents clothing also looked quite complicated to wear with belts, stockings, garters etc. We all liked the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s and even the 50’s fashion. Very glamorous, beautiful fabrics and so much easier to wear! When we got to the 60’s and 70’s we all reminisced at wearing the styles, minis, maxis and hot pants! Needless to say now it is trousers, trousers and trousers with the occasional dress or skirt. How our fashions choices have changed in our life times!
One of the cabinets was being changed and on speaking to the staff we were told that the exhibits on show are tiny part of the collection the museum holds. The exhibits are only changed about every three years due to lack of resources.
We enjoyed a really interesting morning. We noted that there is a special exhibition of underwear on until March and I think that one we will visit in 2017.
A short visit to the shop and then our trains home after a nice morning.
